Progressive Baroque Live is a concert series named after a 2017 album by Medio Registro, an ensemble led by recorder player Junichi Furuhashi.
The series rearranges and reconstructs early-baroque music, primarily from 17th-century Italy and Spain, to explore new possibilities. At the same time, the performers share a commitment to preserve as much as possible of the era’s performance practice and spirit.
Early baroque music emerged as the door opened on the Baroque era, when composers were seeking new forms of music in response to a changing age. This series connects that new music with the idea of the progressive and takes an adventurous approach to the music of the period.
Spanish music plays a central role, with particular focus on an era that left few ensemble works. Organ and vihuela compositions are arranged and reconstructed for ensemble to reveal new appeal.
Progressive Baroque in FUKUOKA carries the subtitle New Music in 17th-Century Italy and Deep Music in the Spanish Golden Age. Its arrangements emphasize evolution in the Italian repertoire and deeper exploration in the Spanish repertoire. Earlier pieces have been rearranged several times, offering a fresh experience even to returning listeners.
