MR BONGO, the long-running UK label that helped spread the Brazilian-music movement across club scenes worldwide from the late 1990s through the 2000s and has shared world music and rare groove for more than 20 years,MR BONGOis coming to Fukuoka!
In collaboration with speaker brand HIGO BEAT, which has a workshop in Aso, Kumamoto, the pop-up comes to Fukuoka after Tokyo, Kyoto, and Himeji.

Artist Profile: HIGO BEAT × MR BONGO
Founded in a small London basement in 1989, Mr Bongo rapidly rose as a pioneering force in global music.
While championing rare Brazilian and other Latin music, it became the first record shop outside the United States to sell releases from independent hip-hop labels such as Def Jam. Mr Bongo later expanded its retail presence, including a shop in Shibuya.
The company moved its office to Brighton in 1999, closed its retail shops in 2003, and shifted its focus to the record label. In 2017, it opened a new Brighton store that became a haven for diggers seeking popular African, Latin, and Brazilian records.
Since launching the label, Mr Bongo has become known for reissuing Brazilian, Latin, and African music while also discovering new talent and releasing many original records.
More recently, it collaborated with Luke Una on an É Soul Cultura compilation. Luke is a gifted musical storyteller, and the compilation has been described as a fine example of musical alchemy, bringing together old and new, rare and underexplored sounds from around the world under his É Soul Cultura banner.
Mr Bongo is renowned for seeking out exceptional, undiscovered music of every kind. While searching for quality and superb sound, it discovered HIGO BEAT and now uses its speakers at lively events at the Brighton headquarters.
HIGO BEAT founder Wood Billy has roots stretching back more than 20 years in Brighton’s music scene, where he supplied sound for clubs and special private parties in the vibrant, colorful city. He later designed and installed sound systems for clubs in Chicago.
HIGO BEAT is based in Minamioguni beside Aso-Kuju National Park, a forestry community where sustainable methods have been passed down for generations. When founding the company, using beautiful, ethical local timber was the natural choice.
HIGO BEAT speaker cabinets are made from wood harvested and processed locally. The resulting speakers preserve the material’s natural beauty. Elegant and refined, their appearance matches their sound quality, earning praise from everyone who experiences them.
