May 10, 2026: Kyushu Wind Orchestra Concert 2026
Lament, prayer, and hope: distinguished Japanese works and Barnes’s Third Symphony
The first half presents outstanding works by selected Japanese composers. Meditation and Dance, written by the young Satoshi Ikegami in the early 1970s, challenged an era dominated by original works from the United States. Revised repeatedly since then, it remains an enduring classic.
Next comes Genba Fujita’s Lament of the Archangel Michael. Fujita made major contributions to Japanese wind music through his many original works and orchestral arrangements. Written during the Cold War, this powerful piece still raises urgent questions and feels especially relevant in today’s world.
The orchestra will then perform the original version of Fu-mon by Hiroshi Hoshina. Although introduced as a set piece for the 1987 All Japan Band Competition, it remains one of Hoshina’s most popular works.
The second half features Symphony No. 3, one of the most beloved symphonies by leading American composer James Barnes.
Described by Barnes himself as tragic, the symphony expresses the lament, grief, and prayer he felt after losing his beloved daughter in deeply moving melodies. Its final movement speaks of hope beyond tragedy, making it a landmark in the symphonic tradition.
Internationally active pianist Masa Fujita makes his first appearance as conductor of a Kyushu Wind Orchestra concert. The program offers an exciting opportunity to hear how he interprets these wind works, which are also among his personal favorites.
